Year: 2012
Rated R
Rating: * * * 1/2 Stars
Cast: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving
Touted as one of my favorite films of 2012, Cloud Atlas is as ambitious a movie as one can imagine. It tells almost too many stories to keep up with (6 might not seem like a lot until you have to follow them for almost three hours) and they are told from 6 different time frames as well (examples would be the 1970's, the 1800's, and the year 2144). The cast is large and proficient and look for Tom Hanks and Halle Berry taking on at least 4-5 roles each. This film is much more violent than one would expect (the trailer is misleading), but it possesses a powerful message of hope and a central theme of breaking free from life's unspeakable barriers.
To be frank, Cloud Atlas is a vehicle akin to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Like that masterpiece, it will be analyzed and broken down for many years to come.
